I read a lot of general fiction, but my knowledge of the mystery genre is limited. That being the case, I can't really comment on this as compared to other mystery novels, but purely as a fiction story I thought it was excellent. The murder mystery element was certainly core to the story line and I loved watching it unfold, but even for non-mystery lovers there's a LOT to enjoy here. The characters are engaging and interesting, the story is well-developed and moves at a wonderful pace, and the small town USA setting with a splash of Norwegian culture was highly enjoyable. I cared about the characters. I cared about the story. I had a great time trying to figure out the puzzle. It's light and amusing without being silly. It's serious without being dark. It just finds a nice, comfortable balance that makes it easy and delightful to read. Highly recommended, and I will likely be hitting this up a few more times for gifts over the next year.Product details

While reading, I am sure I had a subtle smile. The author captures the essence of the "cultural pocket" of "Kirby".
The character development was excellent in this book. The insight into the day to day experiences of people in a small North Dakotan town was intriguing to me as I have never experienced Norwegian culture, nor have I ever visited North Dakota. The ending was definitely unexpected!
Uff da! This was one of the most interesting and spellbinding novels I have read. The quaint town mixed with history and murder makes this book different from other authors. Jim can easily become a most loved character like Ms. Marple or Jessica Fletcher. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I haven't read a mystery since reading the Hardy Boys as a kid, and this was a great reintroduction! The story drew me in and kept me coming back. The author drops in some interesting North Dakota / Norwegian facts that I had no idea I was interested in until now. I highly recommend and look forward to the sequel!
Since I reside in the small town this novel was based on, there was the added dimension of trying to figure out the real life people which may have inspired the fictitious characters! If you are from "Small Town, USA" you will likely relate and if not, you will discover the uniqueness which comes with living in a close knit community. I ended up reading until 130am to get to the end. . .I couldn't put it down!!
I had more laughs and more ideas of who did it but never would have guessed the ending. I really enjoyed all the regional sides that were presented. Thank you for a very entertaining story and the many chuckles
I read this on a recommendation from a friend. I have to say my expectations weren't high when I found out that it was a first novel of this type from the author. I was wrong. The author drew me in with his dry sense of humor and the quirky, interesting, and likeable characters. I've read a lot of mysteries, and I usually have it figured out around halfway through the story, so it was a refreshing change to get a surprise in the last few pages. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
